Getting to Know: Dr. Gloria Shafaee-Moghadam

When Dede asked me to write a ”Getting to Know You” entry about my mom for the newsletter, I was overwhelmed because there is A LOT ”to know” in that 5’1” little woman of almost seventy.

For almost nineteen years Dr. Gloria Shafaee-Moghadam has been a teacher of Marines and Sailors, as well as a second mother to some at the Newport Navy Base. Her passion for education and expanding her students’ minds has left footprints across the globe, from the USA to Iran and Algeria for fifty years.

In her spare time she is an avid runner, enjoys travel, appreciates the fine arts, animals, music, fashion, politics, and is a culinary artist too!

My mom’s greatest loves in life though are her family, God, and Gloria Dei Lutheran. Every morning as a child, she would read out loud a passage from the Bible before my sisters (Sara & Roxane) and I would go off to school, and to this day she still does even though we are not there. Mom has been a member of Gloria Dei since 1981, the year I was born and baptized. She has served on many levels, from Sunday school teacher to Church Council President and currently as the Council’s Secretary.

She has a HUGE heart and is always willing to listen and help.

Every day, I thank God for her unconditional nurturing, guidance and sharing her amazing life with my sisters and me. Sure, Mom and I have our disagreements, but at the end of the day, she is my best friend and along with my dad my #1 supporters. Mom inspires me daily with her energy and drive. She is half of my heart, and I feel humbly blessed to have her as my mother.
